Who Are You?

Sermon Notes & Group Questions

Ephesians 1:3 - “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places...”

Because of God the Father…

  • We have been chosen, adopted, and accepted into the family of God.

Ephesians 1:4-6 - “...even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace, with which He has blessed us in the Beloved.”

Because of Christ…

  • We have been redeemed

Ephesians 1:7a - “In Him we have redemption through His blood...”

  • We have been forgiven

Ephesians 7b - “In Him we have redemption through His blood, - the forgiveness of our trespasses...”

  • We have been blessed according to the riches of His grace

Ephesians 1:7-8a - “...the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, which He lavished upon us...”

  • We have been shown the mystery of His will

Ephesians 1:8b-10 - “...in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of His will, according to His purpose, which He set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and things on earth.”

  • We have been made an inheritance

Ephesians 1:11-12 - "In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory."

Because of the Holy Spirit…

  • We have been sealed and delivered

Ephesians 1:11-14 - “In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory. In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.”

Notes:

Begin your study time reading the first chapter of Ephesians.

Q1: Often times in high school or college you have a group of friends that you hang out with. Often times you end up being identified as a part of that group, gang, or “click” of friends. Were you part of a group of close friends in high school or college? If so, you might have some funny stories from those days. If so, share one with your current “gang”.

Read Ephesians 1:3

Q2: This verse says we have been “blessed in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places”. Think about that for just a moment. What do you think it means? How does knowing this truth make you feel? Share with the group.

Q3: Paul really wants his readers to know just how blessed they are! Read Ephesians 1:4-14 to yourself. Find several things that either God, Jesus and or the Holy Spirit have done for us to “bless us”. Share what you find with the group.

Q4: Trying to explain just how “rich” we are IN CHRIST, Pastor and author Warren Wiersbe describes this richness in this way, “when Jesus wrote His last will and testament for His church, He made it possible for us to share in His spiritual riches. Instead of spending it all, Jesus Christ paid it all. His death on the cross and His resurrection make possible our salvation. He wrote us into His will, then He died so His will would be enforced. Then he rose again that He might become our heavenly lawyer to make sure the terms of our inheritance were correctly followed!” Does some part of this explanation resonate with you? If so, tell the group which part, and why.

Read Ephesians 1:7-10

Q5: Paul tells his readers that there is a “mystery being revealed to them”. It’s God’s plan of redemption (chosen by the Father, Redeemed by the Son, and sealed by the Holy Spirit). The followers of the Old Testament didn’t get it, even those of Jesus’ day didn’t get all of it the way we do (because it’s revealed in the Scriptures to us). How do you feel this gives us a greater responsibility to share God’s plan than it might otherwise?

Read Ephesians 1:11-14, then John 17:6

Q6: In the passage in Ephesians we learn we have been given an inheritance from the Father- which is our salvation through Jesus. And throughout John 17 Jesus refers to us as his inheritance from God (we have been given to Jesus)! So we are an inheritance to Jesus, and Jesus is an inheritance to us! Additionally, Paul tells us that our inheritance of salvation is protected (“sealed…as a guarantee”) by the Holy Spirit! How does knowing you are a “protected gift” to Jesus make you feel? Share with the group.

Q7: It can be easy to forget how amazing the “mystery” of God’s plan is, and how we are blessed to be a part of it. How do you think your group can encourage one another in the months to come to live in response to God’s salvation plan?
