Walk It Out

Sermon Notes & Group Questions

Ephesians 4:1 - I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,

Ephesians 5:1-17 - Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
  • Walk In Love
  • Walk In Light

Ephesians 5:5 - For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 - Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
The Kingdom of God – “God’s active and sovereign reign through history bringing about His purpose in the world through Jesus Christ.”
The Kingdom of God is what the world looks like when Jesus gets His way.
Matthew 6:33 about His Kingdom - But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Ephesians 5:7-8 - Therefore do not become partners with them; (don’t let their influence rub off on you; do not participate with them in their sinfulness) for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
How do we walk as children of light?
  • Live like a light. (vs. 9)
  • Determine what pleases God. (Vs. 10)
  • Have nothing to do with darkness; instead, expose it. (10)
Paul’s Plea – WAKE UP!
Ephesians 5:14 - Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

My Notes for today:

Begin your study time reading Ephesians 5

Q1: Read verses 1 and 2 again. Paul challenges his readers as imitators of God to walk in love. What motive does he give that helps us love well? Explain your answer.

Read Ephesians 5: 3-4

Q2: Paul warns his readers about the dangers of immorality (greek word, “porneia”), impurity (other sexual sin), and greed. Why do you think Paul included “greed” with these areas of sin?

Read Ephesians 5:5

Q3: Paul makes a bold statement when he claims that no one who is sexually immoral, impure, or greedy has an inheritance in the Kingdom of God. How do you think we lose out on the blessings of God’s kingdom here and now when we entertain sinful behavior in our lives?

Read Ephesians 5:6-8

Q4: In what ways does our culture try to influence us with “empty words” as Paul warns?

Read Ephesians 5:9-14

Q5: Paul teaches us to walk as children of light. What are some of the keys Paul gives in these verses to live this way?

Close your group in prayer. Thank God for friends to walk with you as you journey together in the blessing of God’s Kingdom on earth!
