The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Sermon Notes & Group Questions

Tony Evans – If everything in life emanates from the knowledge of God, then it’s safe to say that everything in the Christian life emanates from the knowledge of the Holy Spirit.

John 14:16 – “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.”

John 14:16-17 – “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

1. Who Is The Holy Spirit?

Who He Is Not…

He is not passive, but active and involved.

He is not imaginary, but very real and relevant.

• He is a real person!

• He is God!

Matthew 28:19 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”

• He is unique!

Ephesians 1:13 – “In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit…”

2. Why Was He Sent Here?

John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

• To be a Helper

John 14:16 – “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.” (NIV)

John 16:7 – “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.”

• To point us to Jesus

John 16:13-14 – “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

3. How Does The Holy Spirit Help Us?

• He gives us guidance.

John 16:13 – “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth…”

• He helps us to remember the things of God.

John 14:26 – “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

• He gives us the peace of God.

John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

• He empowers us to live victoriously over sin.

John 15:5 – “…for apart from me you can do nothing.”

• He gives us hope!
