The Mighty, Rushing Wind

Sermon Notes & Group Questions

Acts 2:1-3 – “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty, rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.”

Acts 2:3 – “And divided tongues, as of fire, appeared to them and rested on each one of them.”

Acts 2:4-8, 11 – “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound, the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? We hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.’”

1. God Sent His Holy Spirit To Empower A Mission.

2. How Does The Holy Spirit Empower You For The Mission?

How Do I Discover My Spiritual Gift?

Venn Diagram – Jim Collins – Good To Great

  • Ability – What are you good at?
  • Affinity – What are you really passionate about in the body of Christ or the mission of God?
  • Need – Can you think of time when someone told you that God really used you in their life in a particular way?

S = Spiritual Gift – What are your spiritual gifts?

H = Heart – What has God made you passionate about?

A = Abilities – What kind of natural talent do you have?

P = Personality – Where does your personality best suit you to serve?

E = Experiences – What has God been doing in your life? What’s your life story?

• He gives believers the power to speak the Word of God to others. (“Prophesy”)

Acts 2:17 – “And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy…”

Acts 20:24 – “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.”

“The moment you are converted to Jesus, you are sent out on a mission. You’re either a missionary or a mission field. There is no third option.” – J.D. Grear

What is something you really enjoy about going to church?

What would you say is the difference between going to church and being the church?

Read Acts 2:1-8, 11 and Acts 1:8

Why do you think that God chose to use the ability to speak in unlearned languages to those who had received the Holy Spirit?

Do you think it is difficult to talk to others about Jesus? If so, why do you think that is?

Francis of Assisi once said, “Preach the gospel and if necessary, use words.” Does that statement resonate with you? Explain your thoughts.

Use any extra time you might have this week to pray over the people you believe God has put into your life to share the love of Christ with. Pray for one another. Pray for the Spirit’s help, direction, and power.

Our Groups team is throwing a summertime party! If you’re taking the summer off, consider joining us for our Summer Sessions coming June 23, 30 and July 14, 21 at the church.
