Sermon Notes & Group Questions

Genesis 6:1-6 - “When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, ‘My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.’ The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him to His heart.”

Ezekiel 28 - “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering You were an anointed guardian cherub. I place you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till the unrighteousness was found in you. In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.”

James 1:14 - “But we are tempted when we are drawn away and trapped by our own evil desires.”

Genesis 6:6 - “And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him to His heart.”

Genesis 6:8-9 - “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.”

“Favor is what God does for you that you cannot do for yourself.” (Mark Batterson)

“The greatest moments in life are the moments when God intervenes on our behalf and blesses us way beyond what we expect or deserve.” (Mark Batterson)

Hebrews 11:6-7 - “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”

Genesis 6:22 - “You are also to take two of each living creature, a male and a female, on board the ship, to preserve their lives with you: two of every species of bird, mammal, and reptile—two of everything so as to preserve their lives along with yours. Also get all the food you’ll need and store it up for you and them.”

Genesis 6:22 - “Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.”

Genesis 7:5 - “And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him.”

Genesis 7:23 - “He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth.”

Exodus 2:3-5 - “When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the riverbank. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.”

Joshua 1:9 - “Be strong and courageous I am with you wherever you go.”

“Mercy as endless as the sea…may I never lose the wonder of your mercy.” (Matt Redman)

Q1: In what ways do you think sin lures us in?

Read Genesis 6:6

Q2: What do you think this verse says about the heart of God for his creation, and for us?

Read Genesis 6:8-9

Q3: “Favor is what God does for you that you cannot do for yourself.” God seems to show Noah favor because he walked with God. Has God ever shown you favor? If so, how; and why do you think he did?

Read Hebrews 11:6-9

Q4: Hebrews 11 is called the “Hall of Faith”. Noah and many other important men and women who were used by God are mentioned there. How do you think our faith is connected to God’s favor?

Read Exodus 2:3-5

Q5: Moses was carried to safety in an “ark” just as Noah was. Only Moses was just a child. Has there ever been a time in your life where you received the “mercy of God’s favor” when it seemed you didn’t deserve it?

End your group with a time of prayer and thanksgiving. Ask God for his favor over your church, your group, your family and your life.
