Stand Firm

Sermon Notes & Group Questions

Ephesians 6: 10-17 - “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

1. We Are In A Battle That Is Very Real and Very Strategic..

Spiritual Warfare – is an ongoing conflict being waged in the invisible, spiritual realm that is being manifest in the visible, physical realm. (Tony Evans)

Ephesians 6:13 - “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

2. We Are Facing An Enemy That Is Cunning and Relentless

Ephesians 6:12 - “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Satan has two human targets: unbelievers and believers!

  • He wants to blind the mind of unbelievers to the truth

2 Corinthians 4:4 - “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

  • He wants to lure believers into living a defeated life.

Matthew 12:25 - “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

3. We Have Been Sufficiently Armed For The Battle

If you are a follower of Jesus then…

  • You have been already been made victorious through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

We are not fighting for victory; we are fighting from victory.

Colossians 2:15 - “In this way, he disarmedthe spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

Ephesians 6:10 - “…be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

  • You have been given legal authority over Satan.
  • You have been given weapons that are legit and dangerous.

Ephesians 6:13-17 - “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God…

1. The belt of truth (vs. 14)

2. The breastplate of righteous (vs. 14)

3. Shoes of peace

Two kinds of peace:

  • Peace with God

Romans 5:1 – “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Peace of God

Philippians 4:7 – “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

4. The shield of faith

5. The helmet of salvation

Matthew 16:18 (KJV) - “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

6. The sword of the Spirit

Hebrews 4:12 - “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Stand Firm!

My Notes:

Begin your study time reading Ephesians 6:10-17

Q1: Throughout the book of Ephesians Paul has been reminding us of who we are in Christ and the ways we can live as Children of God. As he ends this letter he tells us to prepare for opposition to all of that. Do you believe your life has been challenged or opposed by the enemy? If so, in what way?

Read Ephesians 6:10-13

Q2: Paul gives a challenge to his readers to stand firm against the attack of the enemy. Describe what you think it means to stand firm.

Read Colossians 2:15

Q3: Paul is writing to the Colossian believers that we fight the enemy not from a position of weakness but from a position of victory because the agenda of Satan has already been dismantled and defeated. He cannot win. That’s critically good news for us as believers. How does this reminder change the way that we view the battle we have with the enemy in our marriages, the purity of our motives, the way we relate to our children, etc?

Read Ephesians 6:14

Q4: A soldier would tuck his tunic into his belt and his belt would hold his sword and support his breastplate, which covered his heart. How do you think God’s truth and righteousness given to us through Christ helps us win the fights Satan picks with us?

Read Ephesians 6:15-16

Q5: Romans soldiers wore shoes with cleats on them so they wouldn’t lose their footing during the battle. Often times their shields would have hinges on them so they could lock shields together for strength. Peace and faith are extremely important in the battles we face with the enemy. In what way do you think God’s peace and our faith extinguish the fiery arrows of Satan or his army?

Read Ephesians 6:17-18

Q6: A helmet is designed to protect the head. Satan took his best shot at the head of the church, Jesus, and was defeated when Jesus died to provide our salvation. The sword used in biblical times was not usually a long sword as we would imagine but a shorter dagger with sharp edges on both sides. It was a very lethal weapon. How do you believe our salvation by Jesus and the word of God assist us in battle? Explain your thoughts.
