RUSH 2015 – Night 4

Sermon Notes & Small Group Questions

Everybody deserves an opportunity to be brought into the presence of Jesus!

“When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus.” – Mark 2:1-12

What Are The Mats That Keep Your Friends From Coming To Jesus?

1. Unbelief

2. Indifference

3. Distrust

4. Bondage

5. Anger

6. Busyness

7. Fear

What Will It Take For Us To Help People To Get Beyond Their Mat?

1. A caring heart

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” – Mark 12:30-31

2. A sense of calling and responsibility

“Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. There are still others to whom you need to show mercy, but be careful that you aren't contaminated by their sins.” – Jude 1:23

3. A sense of urgency

"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” – Matthew 24:36

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” – Matthew 24:44

4. Prayer

“Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?” Jesus replied, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.” – Mark 9:28-29

5. Courage

6. Loving persistence

“Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!” Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!” – Mark 2:5-12
