Matthew 3:2 - “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Matthew 4:17 - “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 - “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Joel 2:13 - “Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.”

Deuteronomy 30:2 - “Return to the Lord your God, you and your children, and obey his voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul…”

Matthew 4:16 - “The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”

Acts 2:38 - “And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 3:17-20 - “And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus.”

Acts 4:12 – “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Acts 8:22 – “Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you.”

Acts 17:30 - “The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent…”

“Repentance is a discovery of the evil of sin, a mourning that we have committed it, a resolution to forsake it. It is, in fact, a change of mind of a very deep and practical character, which makes the man love what once he hated, and hate what once he loved.” –Charles Spurgeon

“Repenting means experiencing a change of mind that now sees God as true and beautiful and worthy of all our praise and all our obedience.” – John Piper

Romans 10:9-10 – “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”

Romans 10:9-10 (The Message Version) - “You’re not “doing” anything; you’re simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That’s salvation. With your whole being you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud: ‘God has set everything right between him and me!’”

Revelation 2:5 – “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.”

Revelation 3:19 – “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.”

Job 42:6 – “Therefore I retract, and I repent in dust and ashes.”

Group Questions:

Q1: Do you think Christians in general need a renewal of their faith in God? Why or why not?

Read 2 Chronicles 7:14, Joel 2:13, and Deuteronomy 30:2

Q2: Pastor Paul taught this week that “The message of the scriptures has never been ‘turn or burn’, it is to turn and live.” In what way do you think many believers are not really living the way (the freedom, the power, the hope) that God desires for his children? Explain your answer.

Q3: Do you think for many Christ followers repentance is a difficult thing? Why do you think that is?

Read Acts 8:14-24

Q4: How do people try to have a relationship to God but on their own terms? Give some specifics to explain your thoughts.

Read Romans 10:9-10

Q5: What do you think is dangerous about believing that doing good (like going to church more, giving something, doing something more) is what gets us closer to God? Why is it dangerous?

Read Deuteronomy 30 together

Q6: The main message this week is that whatever needs awakening needs repentance. Not just a change of behavior but a faith that Jesus heals, strengthens, saves. Do you need healing or awakening for anything in your life? Allow the group to pray for you.
