Revive – Prayer

Sermon Notes & Group Questions

Revival - “Awakening, stimulating the life, bringing it to the surface again.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 - “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Jonah 3:4 - “Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

Jonah 3:8 - “...but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.”

How Should We Pray For Revival

1. We must approach God with a humble heart.

Jonah 3:5 - “And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.”

When we come to God in humility here’s what He promises:

• His grace – James 4:6

• His forgiveness – 1 John 1:9

• His blessing – Proverbs 18:12

• His acceptance

Psalm 51:17 - “The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”

• His ear – 2 Chronicles 7:14

2. We have to seek God with a sense of urgency and persistence.

Jeremiah 29:13 - “you will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

1 Thessalonians 5:17 - “Pray without ceasing.”

3. We have to embrace holiness in our lives.

Jonah 3:8 - “...but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.”

Psalm 66:18 - “If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.”

Psalm 24:35 - “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart...”

Jonah 3:10 - “When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.”

Group Questions:

Q1: When you think of a revival in your mind, what do you think of, what does it look like?

Q2: Read the following thoughtfully- Charles Finney wrote that “Revival is nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God. Just as in the case of a converted sinner, the first step is a deep repentance, a breaking down of heart, a getting down into the dust before God, with deep humility, and a forsaking of sin.” Why do you think revival is so important for our churches to experience? Explain your thoughts.

Read 2 Chronicles 7:13-18

Q3: Do you think that prayer and “seeking God’s face” is important for us to see revival happen in our group and our church? If so, why do you think that is?

Read Jeremiah 29:11-13

Q4: In your opinion, what difference is there between a person who prays and a person who prays with urgency?

Read James 5:13-20, Matthew 7:7-11

Q5: How can our group pray for our own revival? What is holding us back from seeking God with all our hearts?

End your group praying for your group. Continue to ask God for revival in your heart, your group, (all our groups) throughout our church and in our community! Your group will become what you pray for!
