Rescued from Guilt

Section 1

Some important truths about guilt and shame.

  • There is a difference between guilt and shame.
  • Our enemy loves to mess with us in the arena of our guilt and shame.

“One of the most effective ways the enemy keeps you from becoming a powerful champion for the kingdom of God is to turn you against yourself – discouraging you and paralyzing you from moving forward.” (Charles Stanley)

We need to recognize the difference between legitimate guilt and false guilt.

  • Legitimate guilt comes from our choice to sin.

James 2:10 - “For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws.”

Romans 8:1 - “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

  • False guilt comes from wrong thinking.

False guilt plays out three ways:

  • Experiencing shame over believing something is a sin when it’s not.
  • Experiencing self-condemnation over something that has already been confessed and forgiven.

Psalm 103:12 - “He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.”

Isaiah 43:25 – “I will blot out your sins for my sake and will never think of them again.”

  • Experiencing guilt over something that was beyond our control but still made us feel damaged or sinful.

Romans 8:28 - “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

How can we be rescued from guilt and shame?

  • Repent of unconfessed sin

1 John 1:9 - “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

  • Preach the gospel to yourself everyday

“To preach the gospel to yourself, then, means that you continually face up to your own sinfulness and then flee to Jesus through faith in His shed blood and righteous life. It means that you appropriate, again by faith, the fact that Jesus fully satisfied the law of God, that He is your propitiation, and that God’s holy wrath is no longer directed toward you”. (Jerry Bridges – “The Discipline of Grace”)

Romans 4:7-8 - “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”

Romans 8:1 - “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Colossians 1:22 - “Yet now He has reconciled you to Himself through the death of Christ in His physical body. As a result, He has brought you into His own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault.”

  • Replace lies about yourself with the truth of God’s Word

That mistake will always be with me – 2 Corinthians 5:17 - “If anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

I will always be a failure2 Corinthians 2:14 -But thank God! He has made us His captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now He uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume.”

God couldn’t possibly love me or even accept me after all I’ve done Romans 5:8 - “But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

I don’t know if I can go onMatthew 11:28-30 - “Then Jesus said, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you. Let Me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

  • Rest in and operate out of His grace

Colossians 2:14 - “He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.”

2 Peter 1:3 - “By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the One who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence.”
