Rescued From Fear

Section 1

Where do our fears come from?

  • Our sin nature

Genesis 3:8-11 - “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ And he said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked?’”

  • Attitudes we are taught as children
  • Our imaginations
  • A lack of information

Proverbs 3:5-6 - “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

  • A wrong view of God’s nature

Exodus 14:10 - “When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord.”

How can fear have a negative effect on us?

  • Fear can cause us to be skeptical

Exodus 14:11a – “They said to Moses, ‘Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness?’”

  • Fear causes us to be selfish

Exodus 14:11b – “What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt?”

Philippians 2:6-8 - “Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges, He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, He humbled Himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”

  • Fear causes us to be stagnant

Exodus 14:12a – “Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?’”

2 Timothy 1:7 - “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” (NLT)

  • Fear causes us to be short-sighted

Exodus 14:12b – “For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

How can we be rescued from fear?

  • Acknowledge your fear to God.

Exodus 14:10 - “When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord.”

Exodus 14:13 – “And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not.’”

Psalm 55:22 - “Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.”

  • Change your focus from fear to God and the truth of His Word.

Exodus 14:13-14 - “And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.’”

2 Timothy 1:7 - “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. (NLT)

  • Move forward in faith in spite of your fears.

Exodus 14:15 - “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward.’”

Exodus 14:16 - “Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.”

Exodus 14:21 - “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.”

I John 4:18 - “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

Romans 8:35-39 - “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Philippians 4:13 - “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (NKJV)
