Lights of the World – Jesus - The Light of God

Message Notes & Group Questions

John 1:1-9 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

1. God Sent Jesus Into This World To Be His Light

Luke 2:29-32 - “Lord, now I can die in peace! As you promised me, I have seen the Savior you have given to all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

Colossians 1:15 - “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

Hebrews 1:3a - He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

2. Why Does The World Need A Light?

John 8:12 - “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

A few interesting facts about the darkness:

• Darkness loves the darkness.

John 3:19 - "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.

• Darkness has a fear of being exposed by the light

John 3:20 “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”

• Darkness does not overcome the light!

John 1: 5 - “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Major problem: There are too many people who proclaim to be Christians who still walk in darkness.

1 John 1:5-6 - “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”

3. What Can The Light Of God Do For You Today?

1. He can bring you out of the darkness and give you life!

John 12:46 - “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the darkness.”

2. He can serve as a guide for your life.

Psalm 119:105 - “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Caution: Darkness likes to disguise itself as light.

3. He can protect you from the darkness.

Psalm 27:1 - “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

4. He can give you hope for the future.

Isaiah 9:2, 7 - The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone…For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
