Matthew 5:14-16 - “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

You are the light of the world!

Influence!

1. What Is Our Source Of Light?

The Light of God – Jesus!

John 8:12 - Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Psalm 34:5 - Those who look to him are radiant…

2. What Does Jesus Warn Us Not To Do With Our Light?

Hide it!

Two ways to hide your light:

• Inconsistent living

Philippians 2:15 - Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.

• Indifference towards lost people

3. How Are We Called To Shine Our Lights?

Mark 5:16 - In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

1. Let your light shine on strategic places and people.

• Community

• Country

• World

Where is God calling you to shine your light?

2. Let your light shine so people can see Jesus at work in your life.

3. Let your light shine to magnify and reflect God’s glory.

2 Corinthians 3:18 - And all of us have had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more.

Group Questions:

Read Matthew 5:14-16

Q1: When Jesus calls you the light of the world, does that intimidate you? Why or why not?

Read John 8:12

Q2: Jesus also referred to himself as the light of the world (that’s pretty encouraging, isn’t it!). Has Jesus brought light into your personal world? If so, in what way? Share with the group.

Read Philippians 2:15

Q3: It’s pretty hard to live an innocent and clean life as Paul challenges the Philippians to do. What are some of the important habits or practices that help us live in a way that others see Christ’s influence in our lives?

Re-read Matthew 5:16

Q4: Considering how God uniquely made you (outgoing, quiet, etc) and the circumstances you live in (your job, your neighborhood, your hobby, etc) in what way do you believe God uniquely wants you to expose his glory to the people in your path?

If this is the last week you will be having your group this semester, consider taking a little time and telling each other the things you have enjoyed about your group, what you have learned, or how God has changed you through the community you have in your group!

Have a GREAT CHRISTMAS!!
