Hebrews 11:6 - And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Jude 1:20 - But you, dear friends, must continue to build your lives on the foundation of your holy faith. (NIV)
WHAT IS FAITH?
Faith is believing even when I don’t see it.
Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Faith is obeying even when I don’t understand it.
Hebrews 11:7 - By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
Hebrews 11:8 – By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Faith is giving even when I don’t have it.
Hebrews 11:4 – By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
2 Corinthians 8:2-3 - Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, (NIV)
Faith is persisting even if I don’t feel like it.
Hebrews 11:27 - It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt. He was not afraid of the king. Moses kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible. (NLT)
Faith is thanking God even before I receive it.
Hebrews 11:30 - By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.
Mark 11:24 – Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Faith is trusting even if I don’t get it.
Hebrews. 11:39-40 - These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. (NIV)
How does God build our faith
God builds our faith through His Word.
Rom. 10:17 – So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
God builds our faith through testing and trials.
1 Peter 1:7 – These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
Hebrews 11:39-40 - All of these people we have mentioned received God’s approval because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised. For God had far better things in mind for us that would also benefit them, for they cannot receive the prize at the end of the race until we finish the race.
