Sermon Notes & Group Questions

John 10:10 - “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Emotion – Rejection, unworthiness, possibly even some bitterness

John 4:7-10 – “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” “Everyone that drinks from this well, will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks of the water I offer will never be thirsty again.”

Jesus knew her sins and everything about her. And yet Jesus offers her forgiveness. Jesus is offering her eternal life. But he’s also offering her emotional and relational healing as well.

Romans 8:28 - “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

Emotion – Grief

Luke 7:11-17 “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.”

Emotion – Fear

Matthew 8:23-27 “And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Emotion – Doubt

John 20:24-29 – “So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”

Emotion – Hopelessness (Loss of hope)

Mark 9:14-26 – “But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

Regardless of what emotion your dealing with – “It’s not too big for Jesus!”
