A Great Work

Message Notes and Group Questions

Nehemiah 4:13-14 – “Then I stationed men in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, the exposed places, and I stationed the people in families with their swords, spears and bows. And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.”

Nehemiah 4:19 – “And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, "The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.”

John 14:12-13 – “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

“When we preach the gospel and sinners believe, we are doing the greater work: Jesus’s miracles were only signs. We get to participate in what those signs point to.” JD Greer

Matthew 18:10 “For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.”

Luke 4:18-19 – “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Matthew 28:18-20 – “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

"A disciple is a person who has decided that the most important thing in their life is to learn how to do what Jesus said to do. A disciple is not a person who has things under control, or knows a lot of things. Disciples simply are people who are constantly revising their affairs to carry through on their decision to follow Jesus." –Dallas Willard

John 17:18 – “As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”

Nehemiah 4:20 – “At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”

Acts 2:46-47 – “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

1 Corinthians 12:25-27 – “This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it…”

1 Peter 4:10 – “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace…”

Hebrews 10:22-25 – “So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.”

Nehemiah 4:8-12 – “And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night. In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.” And our enemies said, “They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work.” At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, “You must return to us.”

GROUP QUESTIONS:

Read Nehemiah 4:13-20

Q1: We have been talking about the story of Nehemiah for several weeks now. Do you think Nehemiah’s task of building the walls of Jerusalem is like us building walls around our families? If you do, in what way or ways?

Read John 14:12-13, Matthew 18:10, Luke 4:18-19

Q2: JD Greer wrote, “When we preach the gospel and sinners believe, we are doing the greater work: Jesus’s miracles were only signs. We get to participate in what those signs point to.” Have you ever thought that helping people come to faith in Jesus is even more important than the miracles Jesus did on earth? Do you agree with that thought? Why or why not?

Read Matthew 28:19-20

Q3: Were you surprised to hear Pastor Paul say that 39 out of the 40 miracles in the book of Acts happened outside of the church? Does that challenge you, or does it scare you? Explain your thoughts.

Re-read Nehemiah 4:20, Acts 2:46-47, 1 Corinthians 12:25-27, 1 Peter 4:10

Q4: Nehemiah told his people “At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us." Each week group leaders “sound the trumpet,” calling on group members to come together for discipleship, deepening friendships and encouragement for our mission. Is your group a blessing to you in these ways? If so, share it with the group.
